Six luxury cars a car and driver 1965 comparison test (with some DC Photos)

First posted May 29, 2012; updated with additional images in 2015 out classic counter, we spend our days debating the merits or antique car deficits, based on our faulty memories, there are prejudices and subjective impressions of so many decades So every once in a while, it's good to get in the time machine and go back to the source of so many of them car magazine tests we absorbed that young gullible innocent, like this one from six luxury cars in July 1965 Car and Driver I remember so well, or thought I did, as it is obvious that we tend to remember these details that reinforce our own biases Mercedes 600 criticized for not expensive equipment and controls and poor ergonomics Imperial Ouch for poor workmanship.
Originally, I'll make six separate parts on these cars, with excerpts from the original review, but I decided that this Sá fascinating time capsule itself, so I'll just shut up, sprinkle some pictures of DC and put the machine back in time forty-seven years ago, when I was twelve and sucked every word of this Or thought I did.
What inspired this journey through memory was the 1965 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, just like that of the test, showing the cohort wooriegi He was obviously shot in New York, which is where was made the original test , back when it was CD is is it the same car.
CC own cover five of the 1965 luxury cars.
Don is not really a Ford guy, the series began in 1960, and even then, Don drove a Buick LeSabre or convertible Invicta in the first season, although in the driver, he drives an Oldsmobile 1959 only saw all the way at the end of the episode there was a short period, he had a Dodge in the second season, the only reason for this, I think, is that Don Dodge wrecks while driving drunk and stuido wanted a cheap old car, they could ruin when Don gets 62 Coup deVille and Cadillacs were on them.
If the series runs until 1970, Don would probably still be driving a Cup DeVille, or perhaps an Eldorado.

1960 This is the car Invicta frogs used in the true French Connection Note that the crime took place in 62 and the film was made ten years later.
Probably depends on where you lived at the time in the city where I grew up, Caddy has lost a lot of character in Lincoln when Lincoln 61 was introduced in the late 60s and early 70s the W108 W109 Mercedes were provided on at this time, strong Caddy were considered cars for retired blue collar workers who wanted a car that would be their last and had always coveted Cadillacs.
I think 1971 was the year that Caddy began to cut corners and got cheaper a bit like 1969 was the Imperial year has really started to look a flying decontented 69 Imperial El cheapo design that is not very different than what was offered on a 69 Plymouth Fury II or III.
69 Imperial and I love Mopars is really a New Yorker with lipstick.
I do not think that if Draper would be ahead of the curve as far as what the rich and the conscious state like and why.
If his company had a contract with one of the 3 large, so of course that enclose drive from above, but assuming that the advertising agency didn t have one of the Detroit companies as client this company, I bet he will pilot of an MB in 1970.

Not really, if you follow the show, Don is very much a man of his time, he stopped Revolver Beatles album this season after his new wife told him to listen, he said the young hippie girl who was hold back waiting for the scene to see the Rolling Stones that he was worried about his generation, he told his daughter sally to get rid of the go-go boots she was wearing and removing her makeup before that he took her gala dinner this season, Don and his wife voted for Nixon in 1960 in the first season.
Now, towards the end of this season, the company was awarded a contract with Jaguar, to prepare their presentation for Don drove an E-type for the afternoon, he said the car does nothing for me after conduit for a while.
The cool thing about Mad Men is that characters have a realness them, Don is suddenly going to turn into a hippie because the calendar says its 1967.
Miss Daisy also many Caddy thought at first, Boolie Dan Aykroyd has a 48- 49 Sedanet Cadillac, then a 57 Eldorado Brougham, and end what seems to be a 70 280SEL And other than the brief appearance of a 46 - 48 Chrysler and Hudson who replaced, Daisy glued to Cadillacs 55, 65 and 70 models all the way until the end of the film.
Very well made and entertaining film, even without all the neat cars.
The fact is that in 1965, at least two states had unlimited power means, Nevada and Montana at least, and the National Highway defense system was designed to transport troops and armaments to three speed numbers, despite the fact that there weren t trucks capable of this speed at the time the curves and sight lines of the original parts of what we now call the interstate system was designed so that 2 x 2 box x2 in the way of the road could be seen in time to stop this imaginary deuce and a half trip to 100 mph with brake technology of the time so do 120 mph in a car was quite feasible and has been done by some personally as a youngster, I did well over 100 in Nevada in the back seat of the Caddy my uncle for hours at a time while my cousin with small bladder was on the tunnel arbr E transmission pee in a coffee can held by aunt year later, I did three digit speeds in my drum braked 69 LeSabre wo the car whining Yeah hit the brakes 100 are heat and do not do much but take your foot off the accelerator slowing you fast enough, fast enough that you would be able to prevent 2 cube in your wo track whether a traumatic event RP reasonable and prudent speed limit remained in force in those States, outside the cities, until the federal gov t for national limit of 55 mph speed Montana chose to more or less look the other with 10 fine for wasting resources if the agent has decided to spend his time shoot you, who stayed until they return to a speed limit RP for a while in the 90s.

So no, many American cars of the era did collapse if driven at 120 mph all day, even when they have 30 years.
Several cars with Corvette powerplants were tested by Holden in the 90s on European car Bahns and have proven to be mechanically unfit for sustained high speed running and excessive fuel consumption It was a test car GM division to this market if you tell me the US powertrain technology declined more than 30 years hard to credit, but ok GM bankruptcy for a reason.
The SBC is not a Cadillac by a long shot, SBC is the worst GM V8s sustainability and is not suitable for use in high-backed regime with a long life Large blocks BOP and Caddy plants on the other hand were usually coupled with the gears or lower and they loaf around at full speed When you have over 400 ft lbs of torque, you can always accelerate strongly or smoke the tires for a few blocks despite this transmission.
These powered Corvette Holdens have since been sent to England with Vauxhall badging and are a success you can not go that fast unless you spend about 10k more books in a BMW shop Some were given Pontiac badging and sent to States States and will be exported again next year with Chevy SS badging worst GM V8 or not on the ass carry.
TIRES were the main limiting sustained, high cruising speed in the days, no motors or transmissions bursts were common still common in the 1960s Moreover, many people who bought used cars, even the luxury used cars also bought the cheapest possible replacement tires.
Yes, they make a lot of power, but they aren t as sustainable if called to do this power on a continuous basis on the theme of the day stick a 350 or even 454 Chev in a motorhome and if you get 60k out you do really well, but the Olds 455 powered motorhomes continue to go for twice the mileage wo question, of course, you replace several drive chains in transalxe in front wheel drive versions.

I paraphrase the article, but he says the Caddy was a victim of that success s own They sold a lot of them that they did all that much prestige.
I always thought that this was the main reason for MBs Ascendancy Caddy s become too common There is no doubt the MB was a great car with a passionate POV It's just hard to believe that people who were content to waft along the isolation suddenly took an interest handling and braking these are talking points to explain why a beautiful MB was purchased, but the real reason may have more to do with all these people not quite a class is also driving Caddy.
There's an interesting article C D 1975 in which Don Sherman admitted that in terms of pure comfort noise levels A to B, up hardness, etc., the Ford LTD was greater than the great contemporary Mercedes.
But Cadillacs was quite common luxury cars for 15 years only Packard came close in total annual sales, and they were supported by Clippers decidedly Oldsmobile prices.
And it wasn t the two actually change the minds of the cars from the 600 series, it was more common 220SE garden variety or 300 Sedan, who were probably cross shopped by quiet a few people may actually thought their last American cars were increasingly complacent.
I would account My aunt Linda and her husband that people who went to Big Buicks in the 60 Mercedes and Jaguars instead of Cadillac, and sunroof, real wood and most playful nature of these cars against an American luxury boat was the most snob appeal they surely wanted.

In 1967 DeVille is like a resort, 300 March 6 SEL is as exclusive castle Despite a lack of features, a late 60's Mercedes had better performance than any Cadillac spent in 1966 I think you can t ignore the factor of how an approximation to a Cadillac Ninety Eight or Electra 225 was compared, either.
I think Cadillac should have done was offer new LaSalle ReBody slow Opel Diplomat sale and they would have lost much less snob appeal or Eldorado is still huge buyers in the same price range where they offered the Calais and moved all other Cadillac in the price of 500- 1000, which would have made a real Fleetwood 10,000 car when this award meant something, but Cadillac and General Motors as volume saw as the only true sign of success when they still commanded at least half of the market.
Not only is this the time that began Cadillacs downslide, he lost all GM brands its image can t blame the buyers, GM it internally in fact has for themselves.
This pretty black tempered rain 65 made me imagine Roger Sterling comming of the buidling, hat in hand and walking on the driver's door and enter.
It seems to capture this article Detroit at the height of their fat, dumb and happy time they made gobs of money for shareholders, managers were all get big bonuses, workers were all doing a lot of overtime From from this point of view, it is easy to understand why nobody wanted to rock the boat why invest in technology beyond control automatic temperature and automatically dimming headlight.
Well, in the five years M-B has won significant share in the luxury market, and in 10-15 years the Japanese ate lunch Detroit in small cars.

And yet in the 80's Detroit marketing types have insisted they understood their customers The problem was quickly their customers were dying and aging.
The average customer of MB in the early 70 s didn t have a clue what the disc brakes on all four wheels, independent rear suspension, or overhead cam was it just sounded cool, high technology, and they wanted It took it about Detroit always understand that high-income buyers could be influenced by technical selling against cars that were following an old pattern.
I also think that, in particular, the success of Cadillac convicted Once Caddy introduced Calais, they were just too common and could be seen everywhere, to be led by people who are NOTD not our expensive type Yes, there was snobbery in progress and possibly some racism as well, but Caddy on themselves by chasing share at all costs.
As I said in my comment on the cars we love to hate over this Detroit iron generation is frustrating, because Detroit had the money to be the world leader in technology, but he chose to not and paid the price.

The Calais was a new series name for what had been 62 series, if I well remember there n not really take Cadillac at a lower price.
The big problem with American cars of the era and the main cause of the flight of customers to European and Japanese brands was the reliability of American cars broke down right and left that you know someone who owned an era 1980 Cadillac that didn t need to install at least one new transmission Benzes How many people have had to do the same.
Interesting aside the possibly racist motivation behind snob appeal of my white family lived in a bright future, predominantly black neighborhood in Atlanta 60s to mid-70s, and I remember that among the successful blacks, most of them small business owners, an entry-level Cadillac was often the first major status symbol to buy once they entered the territory of the class in any medium security even if they could not quite stretch to a new Caddy, they often opt for an old year used a new less prestigious car.
At the same time, more and more rich, and very white lawyers and doctors South suburban bought their first Coincidence imports.
Of course one can not forget the impact of the use, often modified questionably, Caddies and Lincolns led by many hustlers, dealers and other men recreation of all colors and backgrounds Atlanta I Lincoln reminds baroque cut staff being very popular with this crowd.

They may have tested a 600 in this group, but in reality, few people would have seriously considered against one or Lincoln Cad They would probably look a W108 or W109, less than half the price, and many bought so in all the years the 600 was producing something like 18 if memory serves me, they made fewer than 3,000 of all versions combined It was never intended to be a competitor for these Caddy models and frankly was intended for a much more rarefied market I agree that luxury cars in the United States at the time were just as fast or faster and were reliable high speed all day cruisers, however, when he came cornering, braking and true comfort of long distance, there is no comparison reigns supreme 600, a fact recognized in almost all contemporary tests.
I enjoyed this article and Article any other technology that goes with top writing first order.
I was really impressed by the new features then as central locking, cruise control good, good air conditioning, power windows and mirrors that can be set within the luxury car as standard in almost all all economy cars today.
Interestingly technical article is on hydraulic actuators being everywhere lighter than the electric motors of rare earth magnets have transformed electric motors doo all those jobs now, they were discovered the year after this test, 1966 and only entered volume production in the 1990s.
FYI, wooriegi me is the youngest was really great, I wish I had more than my cell phone with me, he seemed to be in original condition with just a touch of patina inside was perfect too.

Article impressive and fascinating to read the CD test as I like all cars, but the Mk X is my Jag 1 Since I was a teenager, a Mk X 420G is the classic one that I inherit one day I love the style and the look and feel of them I feel based on my experiences in them sitting on dealers as a kid that fuller picture below is my favorite color for them, and is currently on sale here on TradeMe but NZ 28K it's twice what the mint usually go for, precisely NZ 27995 more than I can currently afford My winning lottery dream is to buy a 420G and Beacham Jaguar owned by Bryce Doctor to one of their brightest updates resto-mod for me Ah, happy days.
These 420s were cheap at some point the Iguess people woke up to an impressive work I read about the 30 V12 RR they increased by 2 million, or it costs, but the original engine are the fuel injected automqatic modern and not a turbo shitbox 350, he got into a mod restaurant if you got the medal couldnt be spotted very cool it aint much this outfit can not do.
I'm in the middle of restoring a Jag 420G Love is the only botanical painted metallic green, a Jag XF 2010-2011 dark green by the standards of many cars, they are huge, but in this comparison, it is compact.
Impressive I am so keen that I saw my first on children of the 1980s TV show called Terry and arms traffickers based on the New Zealand Book behalf It was pink cherry interior, and blasted villains everywhere together with the unique color, I was instantly in love with the form, I still am the Wheels magazine used to mock respect to 420GS as I remember they called them fat old G, and said once they lifted their skirts, they could seriously shake on small roads made me laugh anyway I will definitely have a one day my local mechanic's ex-Jag NZ, so that'll be sorted etc. service, we the hopefully sooner than later.

Are you in Oz Oz or NZ A couple 420GS I saw imported here in New Zealand had strange aca factory set-up in the starter supply of air through the rear shelf, but with the compressor so to front in the bay of the engine that is really a bit long pipe connecting all there was an end of 1970 ex-Oz on TradeMe few years ago with air conditioning factory sunroof factory and p windows; all options I hope to someday I hope you post some pictures of yours when it's done, I'm not a fan already.
I am Australian interesting test and I'm not surprised by C Ds comments about the MK X They were almost an E-type drive train with a huge cash freestanding drapped on themselves content motor triple SU carbs, manual versions have the same Moss box and the rear IRS was the same except for a wider track front suspension 58 is different coil overs in the MK X instead of torsion bars in the E, but same disc brakes around the weakest link in the brake at the beginning Mk X s was the system bellows booster Kelsey Hayes, although the last MK X 4 2L s and 420G s went to a brake booster normal depression the nature of the drive train type is that it will be better maneuverability, but a revvy engine especially compared to the other 5 big car cube V8 notice 0-60 time is good enough, in the middle the pack despite the inconvenience cylinder and HP, but the nature of the power delivery should an E-type, not a luxury car your comments on the AC are dead right, mine didnt but th at was the system mounted in the trunk The review comments on the lack of kit is true, but by the standards of British cars, it was good even against Benzs excluding the Grosser Jag would be pretty good, it is helpful to understand that wherever American cars lead the world 30 end up s probably the early 70s was in the comfort and convience features automatic transmission, power steering, air conditioning, cruise control, air conditioning, electric seats, windows, etc. An English car in the 1940s and 50s was luxurious if it had picnic tables wooden many reservoirs Yank were still body on the chassis, drum brakes, leaf springs, drive axles, engines OHV well in the 80 at the end of the MB trumped when he caught up with more luxury features with better engineering and technology.
Thank you, Paul, for the display of this test I test Brooklands in a book, but it is fun to talk with the best and brightest.
When Mercedes examination, it is important to remember that in the mid 1960s, it offered cars that were much cheaper than a Cadillac or a Lincoln, if I recall In essence, the rating plate Mercedes Benz was the equivalent of General Motors, not only Cadillac, as it sold more vehicles at price points.
Mercedes offered a more solid and better handling compared to the Cadillac, but changed its automatic transmission performance hit and seriously undermined his air conditioning was a joke when Cadillac offered the automatic temperature control and reliability has not higher than the Cadillac.
Cadillac, however, began to drop the ball this time by slowly decontenting its cars in the pursuit of it really became apparent volume with the 1971 models, but the process began in the 1960s.

Interestingly, while I love the car, 1967 Eldorado is the car that really shows signs of Cadillac wanting to have his cake and eat it too on hand, it was nicely decorated and built Car and Driver said his coachwork equaled anything of Mercedes-Benz or Rolls-Royce with a reliable, highlighting single wheel drive.
But Cadillac has chosen not to equip standard disc brakes for 1967, which was crazy, because of its weight, highlighting wheel drive and performance capabilities This car should have the brakes had four-wheel disc as it was supposed to be the ultimate standard Cadillac, for crying out loud, and if I remember correctly, if you ordered the leather interior, only the front seats were so covered with leather, and even then it n ' was that the bearing surfaces.
This nickel and dime attitude would be expensive Cadillac in the years to come.
That would have pushed the price of Eldorado, but it would also have made it even more exclusive If there was a Cadillac prerequisite to that time, it was the aura of exclusivity.

Anyway, it wasn t as if GM had not been enough impala sale, Catalinas and A-body not to mention DeVilles to keep factories running and make for any lost volume following an Eldorado even more expensive.
Wow, a great read, I find it surprising how they chose the MB in 1 after on this subject the most boring boxy design, unmarked in unusual places controls, and a small safe.
Funny how they got a personal touch in Elwood Engel doing Imperials like previous years Lincolns I read the reviews before criticizing the end of the 50-restraint on the windshield in the Imperial and how he doesn t good look to the rest of the body I always thought it looked good before, but the view on the same page as the Lincoln and Caddy, now I can see how it looks dated.
So they say the rolls is nearly silent and that's super smooth brakes are amazing and created with the best materials, but they do not like and tell his car WTF most overated.

Thomas, in fact, they didn t say the Rolls had a super-smooth ride.
A big thank you for this precious item should appear at the top of a specialized list of test drives in these good old days when these cars were new and there was no speed limits in Europe, I have led each Imperial Le Baron, not the Crown road conditions are different in Europe compared to North America, so my opinion may be a little distorted my uncle, my father's brother had a RR SC-III, beautiful majestic piece of machinery, high visibility, incredible workmanship and quality, the total dignity even when driving exploding Unforgettable thing was quite fast in reality and, sitting on top of other small European cars on the road, you you really had the feeling of dominating another uncle, my mother's brother was a 600 Grosser as they called it, I drove it full blast across Europe several times, so smooth and easy to con reduce an absolute rocket with fabulus suspension make you feel more comfortable in another car, in total silence he runs and runs and runs without getting tired at full speed, you completely forget the size and weight my aunt of the car my mother's sister had a Lincoln Continental 4-door convertible with these beautiful doors of suicide, I later bought its magnificent well-finished car it quietly moves you from a to B with a good performance road for days, but far from sporty electrical wiring system was a pain in the neck, repairs costed a fortune on Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham was a treat, the father of my best friend had one fitted with a red leather interior, by far the most impressive of all by its silence and comfort when driving too fast, but boy, what gas guzzler Last but not least the Jag M ark-X, a big beast when driving, with almost the luxury of a Rolls, near the performance Grosser 600, it would lead more quickly than the Cadillac, Lincoln and some thing that imperial, on a long, say de Paris in Monte Carlo, would be welcome and enjoyable three US luxury c ars would be much, so much slower over the same distance and swallow much more gas, which makes the trip less relaxing Despite their size, they would be more comfortable in city traffic, yes, perhaps even to Paris because small cars would be too afraid to run into them in these days, perhaps for this reason, the luxury cars in the US were very popular in Switzerland and many other European countries, perhaps because they were quite reliable when driving and driver size didn t really matter their My choice Each of them, but for different reasons 1966 Fleetwood Mercedes for comfort 600 for long distance driving in 1962 for Baron excentricty the Rolls for the evening, Lincoln, I do not know if there would be another reason to just cruise around, Mark-X predecessor mmm, maybe I prefer the most majestic of the brand-IX or E-type sportier.
Paul, but curb weight Driver from the list Cadillac Fleetwood 65 to 4,600 lbs Perhaps they meant the shipping weight for all cars listed.
If only car and driver would give detailed testing and engine weight thorough research today Of course, there were errors in particular confusion with hydraulic load operation on some of the cars, but there were still many information that you never hear about today's performance and the results seem to be more honest Interesting Lincoln was 700 pounds heavier then the Cadillac, but 3 more MPG Cadillac was the best looking of the group, I think the Rolls had drum brakes, but they were determined to be the best of the interesting group Fastback conversion for the Corvair is pretty tacky looking I noticed it comes with a Lucas flame Thrower I asks if it's James Bond device, or some kind of ignition upgrade anyway, he probably didn t work very long thanks to re print old CD test, it was a pleasure to read.
Lucas Flamethrower high candlepower beam of popular aftermarket with the sports car game Tweedy They were marketed in the days before the halogen headlights John Fitch's included in the package for Corvairs Fitch Sprint.

I remember a test several ways subcompacts it a few years ago, in which CD evaluated the Chevy Sonic Turbo second behind the marking on the Chevy Honda Fit, for an engine that wasn t as flexible as the Honda s It took a deep dig into the results of only expanded graphical online test to find the Fit test were more than 1,000 miles on it while Sonic was the first tight tankful maybe someone on the staff with higher got a long memory recovery for the launch of the ring body X.
Terrific item that gives you a past taste of time description of the Rolls is a dose of reality if you make a study of Rolls Royce cars of that period.
In the lead photo, Cadillac stands out as modern, serious, grown car unpretentious, just the practical choice of the man who succeeded in 1965 to improved shocks, tires and a decent set of disc brakes, it appears to have been the standard undisputed leader in the world in 1965 are some simple settings, it is regrettable that Cadillac didn t mind at this critical faster than the Mercedes research has most of the ingredients of a headache for Cadillac was just a handful of years away from setting in.
You know, I've written a lot of CC messages, but it's the only one that causes such an emotional reaction in me, to the point of ripping a bit I do not know why Perhaps s have seen a car American luxury equal to anything else in the world has to offer or maybe through the lens of hindsight, I'm just romanticizing the mid sixties anyway, thank you for reposting it, Paul.
Jay Leno has such enthusiasm for his 600 that is contagious and I get that if money is no object, I certainly see the appeal of the 600 and I think it is beautiful and I would like to have one, but I've never driven one or owned one.
But Carmine's just the Cadillac should win the test based on the only luxury and especially with additional cost wholesale, if you added disc brakes in the Cadillac, they would have been hard to find a flaw.

This is a complaint I have Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson says all American cars are crap And yes, my Mustang is certainly not Porsche Boxster and internal controls are cheap but show me another car for 17,000 books even comes close to the Mustang or Challenger or Camaro for the cost, they are amazing compared to the competition.
Moreover, Leno mentioned that hydraulic power windows Big including a valve with a cost of 15k replacement I would bet that if a window motor has a 65 Caddy, you could make any GM car with PW 30 years working in it for parts scrap cost luxury burger.
This article is one of the reasons why my father and later his son had an ongoing subscription to Driver for over 40 years.
David E Davis left his unique mark on the magazine during his long career there.
The joke during this period was that the Cadillac kept a consistently reliable ultra-rich around for many times their Rolls-Royce I mean do not follow.

Not listed in the feature section of the mechanical servo brakes Rolls was that if it may be nice to stop highway speed car he didn t actually engage very well unless the car was moving Try to parallel Park 65 Rolls You can t cause the servo is not moving enough, the car has to move something like twice is long before he commits.
Again, if you got a Rolls, you got DRIVER, so, no, I d not aware of the price differences in these 20,500 cars a Mercedes 600 is really, really amazing The 1960s were not as today ' hui to outrageous pay scales for the upper classes, it weren t that many people who never could afford one.
I think this comparison really shows why Cadillac was is the world standard for the standard it should excel in the style that made him, engineering the Mercedes is inner and outer quality of which she has no Cadillac engine is very good is the Rolls Mercedes engine has the highest score, with Cadillac second However, Mercedes and Rolls got the best quality control in terms of notes, with third place Cadillac 42 of 50 I think Cadillac is simply not rank quite World Before World war, I think the upper end of the line Cadillac Fleetwood 75, 80 s and 90 were world class.
I remember the car comparisons and apples and oranges pilot, pretending cars tested were in the same class, readily available for virtually all cars buyers such as 600 MB, RR Silver Cloud and even Jaguar were very au beyond the financial capacity of the majority of customers Cadillac Lincoln Imperial CD still selected European cars a well oh-so superior, they should have been for the large price premium to own one.
To the upper end of the general American middle class, the Cadillac was the best around the car for the money; Lincoln and Imperial a little less perhaps for the lower resale value Any one of these three was still an aspirational car for most buyers, and something they could finally afford and enjoy as a used car well kept was rarely the case with the European competitors.
The Jaguar was almost the cheapest car of the test, only beaten by the imperial Cadillac had been done Eldorado Brougham, which cost more than 20 000 to build in the late 50 he was the most expensive car test.

However, getting to the point, good value for money is not a car The world standard for luxury cars I do not know what Mercedes has tried to make the 600, but they have produced about 100 per year compared the Rolls Royce Phantom s, it would have been much, and bargain prices.
Fasinating read the Jaguar caught my attention until all these defects arose out of curiosity, I decided to look at the current values of the group presented The Imperial and Lincoln worth two thousand more today than when new Cadillac and Jaguar worth about twice as much and things get crazy should be 70,000 to buy the Mercedes, and 100 000 for the Rolls Royce today My delivery You pay the name with the Rolls, Mercedes is probably just as good as everybody said at the time, and I find it very attractive Lincoln once.
A hundred grand is only the starting point for 600s and it would cost a hundred more just to get to or twohundred more There are less expensive to have, and there are reasons why they are cheaper as there are reasons perhaps it's best alternative to find one of the really nice start.
And maybe a 600 is not even a viable option without unlimited amounts of money is really the car for those where money is no object and if it is not irrelevant, it isn t for you when car even Jay Leno says maintenance is crazy expensive, you know shit is real.
Although I love the car to death, and I could probably kill for the opportunity to own one, I would not really want to be stuck with one that needed a lot of repair and can not afford to having set the 600 is an indulgence, and must be treated as such.

As this car for sale in 165 Grand Prix since 2006 restoring 185 Grand These are the kind of sunk costs involved.
From what I understand the Mercedes 600 was never really in order, something will definitely break while you fix something else.
It was a time for 2 years before I discovered this type of car magazine Until about 1967 my library would consist of magazines like Hot Rod.
You mention prejudices Over the years, the British magazine CAR would do similar tests like this, but almost always European brands of cars that American products were considered massively uncompetitive, and 99 times out of 100 Jaguar won the test Jaguar If not, then BMW, Mercedes but almost never be a fan Ford, no matter what the test results, I would have voted with my dollars and go with the Lincoln even though the basic design, then, several years the Cadillac sEEMS rival Mercedes near it borders too flashy for a luxury car Jaguar looks like a whale on wheels, outside of Lincoln just seems to hit all the right marks no pun I almost forgot Imperial as the greatest art a problem Chrysler forgettable car.
It is quite say how slow these cars full size 60's were 0-60 with the fastest car being two seconds Cadillac 9 It is interesting to put into perspective many of the 70 cars of smogged issue weren t really that much slower than there 60s counterparts despite being down both the power levels a perfect example being my uncles 1965 Cutlass with 330 Olds Jetfire V8 engine ultra high compression and 320 horsepower compared to his 1974 Cutlass 350 4 BBL with Rocket V8 that makes 180 horsepower now, the car in 1965 was indeed faster, but not as much as powers deduct Keep in mind that this difference of 70-80 HP was in the how they were recorded the old raw score differs from net mainly in the way it was average and accessories that were hung during the tests.

Another example is a 1979 Trans Am with 220 HP 400 attached to a 4-speed stick that expired at 6 0-60 seven seconds which was faster than most 60 s then called muscle cars odd bar or 455 Buick GS Yenko F-body etc. If I had to talk to a car enthusiast that would continue and how the car fast running every 60s muscle cars were although most were severely handicapped by lousy tires, brakes, steering and suspension As they say the memory often cheat.
Hmmmm I drove several Trans Ams end I don t remember in 1970 none of them doing zero to sixty in 6 to 7 seconds stock status.
Perhaps the test car was heavily breathed by a cooperative car dealership.
I found a road test car driver for downsized Deville 78 0-60 6 seconds a 10 standing quarter mile is February 18 sec 78 8 0-80 MPH is May 18 sec A 1965 convertible Deville would Quarter standing in 17 2 sec 82 MPH raw power does not need the engine to have a cooling system, exhaust system and air filter what we know is announced on horse power, which may have been somewhat different from the actual power, for example, the engine 430 CID Buick is rated at 360 HP, the 1970 455 is rated 370 HP would have expected about 380 HP.
