Citroen DS5 hatchback review - CarBuyer
individual looks, beautifully designed interior is quiet, good cruising qualities.
automatic Hybrid4 not good, too severe suspension at lower speeds.
Arriving on the scene in 2011, the DS5 is the flagship model of the Citroën DS5 s boast that the executive car of choice for discerning drivers who want luxury, style and performance of the economy with previous generations Citroën cars is both disappointing and with poor materials and build quality problems, can they really make a luxury car We were sent the range topping Citroen DS5 Hybrid4 DSport 200 Airdream for a week to find out.
The DS5 is definitely a beautiful car Its sharp, modern style exudes class from every angle you choose to see Citroën designers deserve a round of applause for the DS5, for some reasons First, the DS5 stands out from the crowd, and you certainly won t be just another Euro-clone engine about unnoticed secondly, the DS5 looks like it has been carefully and painstakingly established in its design, and not done by a computer calculating coldly its dimensions and lines.
I love, absolutely love, Saber chromium from the A-pillar of the headlight, it is bold, aggressive, and the French in design as possible all outside DS5 is packed with details, such as jagged lines jutting out of the hood, slashes of rich chrome here and there, beautiful cutouts for LEDs in the headlights, deep swage lines running along the sides, and well more Although there are many going well, it is definitely not too much, or exaggerated.
The DS5, all elegant and chic, has a tough, tense look about it This is perhaps because of the chunky front end, and a roof line that seems low, sloping well back, while two huge chromed exhaust tips poke false on the back, looking for all the world like two Lamborghini-inspired outings.
As long as you spec a decent set of alloy wheels 18 black Canaveral are quite nice, the Citroën DS5 will be good in almost every color options rather limited The DS5 is a real turner head, and drew looks of admiration whenever I leads, and rightly so, for that Citroën is a triumph of the current design of the car, combining sportiness with the class of a luxury car luxury in this, Citroën has created a very desirable car future and that alone goes a long way to attract buyers.
Motoring journo s often refer to the interior of a car like the cabin, and it is that this term should the Citroën DS5 perfectly Citroën DS5 DSport is the highest available model, and it is one we sent to be honest, in any spec interior looks quite nice, but DSport spec with deep red leather club chairs, it seems quite amazing.
The DS5 already seems to appeal to the outside, but open the door and you'll can not help but be impressed by the plush cabin There stitched leather panels on the doors and the deep leather seats with their bracelet model watch just ask to be seated, so I slipped into the sumptuous leather driver's seat, I pass on the disappointing massage function, noticing immediately inside the DS5 has a cocooning effect, and you feel enveloped you giving a sense of comfort and rest something that you feel only with high quality luxury cars, actually never thought I would say a Citroën.
In the rear, passengers that I was happy with the rear seats, which again are deep and comfortable and are stretched in a relaxed way, and there's easily enough legroom for tall people size Some reports about it being cramped, perhaps because of the low roofline, but I have not seen any real problems.
the boot space is not huge because the rear also contains the electrical system, but it is still pretty enough, and although it has a high load point, he Sá sense of completely flat section obtain ISN things back on your problem is also a nice little door in the center, housing a sub-level storage compartment, so it is quite handy in that department.
A main feature of the next section my eye was drawn was the center console, which is high and wide between the driver and passenger It is a beautiful wonderful design, with buttons like the end stocky shark for windows and they sat on either side of the main scroll wheel and the multimedia system controls, satellite navigation and more before this is a small shift automatic transmission, and the 200 Hybrid4 version airdream it s an operator dial to select four different operating modes, which I will talk later.
Up to this, and the dashboard center console also has some chic, expensive-looking features, such as metal dials for the heating controls, chrome stud buttons for air conditioning and rear screen, and 'add that they're supported by brushed aluminum panels the large integrated satellite navigation, the music system screen looks as good with modern graphics and an easy to use layout.
All this is fine, except for one glaring; Plastic section quite terrible and the buttons on the stereo, just below the screen Why, oh why, someone Citroën think it was a good idea to do it completely spoils the appearance of the dashboard they look was transplanted from a hi eighties-fi, or taken directly from a Rover SD1 speed a terrible decision that one, and they're so ugly that even look for a second division induces a headache with double vision.
Fortunately, the pilot console and dials are much better three individual screens display information about your energy consumption for electric power, and there is no tachometer, but a power dial, showing you the percentage of power that you are using, the usual speedometer plus another multi-purpose screen that provides information about where power comes or goes to say the wheels are driven by electric or diesel engines and if the battery is charged or discharged in addition to a host of other things such as fuel economy and sat nav directions.
Press the start button and before the pilot console, to get up a head-up display HUD, giving you your speed, sat nav instructions and personally, I could not get used to and felt it was more of a distraction than a help, especially when the dials are well placed and easy to read that I am siding with the fact that HUD Citroën is just a bit too fanciful, and if it was an option I do it to spec.
A key feature of the DS5 interior are the three glass panels in the roof, which are beautiful It's one for the driver and passenger, and a large part for the rear passengers It's nice break from the norm to have one large panoramic roof, and I think this way adds an extra degree of class, especially since you can open or close the blinds to them individually more than the controls mounted on the roof really cool HUD and blinds glass roof.
Sitting in the Citroën DS5 Hybrid4 DSport is quite reminiscent of sitting in a private jet is comfortable, luxurious and especially a beautiful design Hold well, it's a thing well done, firmly fat together and uses high quality material I sorry, but it's a Citroën that we always talk about, right Yep, and so far I love him a lot.
The DS5 is available with four engines, according to the specifications that you go for there Sá THP 200 petrol in the manual, e-HDI 115 diesel in the manual and a diesel engine HDi 160 automatic or manual, and one we sent 200 HYbrid4 Airdream automatic, which is a diesel full hybrid.
The Hybrid4 is a 2 0 liter, 4-cylinder turbo diesel with 163 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque of 300 Nm, coupled to an electric motor that produces 40 horsepower, making 200 combined hp, and the production of emissions as low as 88g km zero UK tax on vehicles, and even the biggest 19 wheels, it is still only 102 g km or 20 measly per year in October 2013.
The Hybrid4 system also lie you're getting selectable four-wheel drive of the Citroen, the diesel engine drives the front wheels and the electric motor, the practical rear tires when bad weather closes in a dial mounted next to the gear lever offers four driving options; Auto you click between automatic diesel and electric motor, Sport adds more power using the electric motor at the same time means ZEV Zero Emission Vehicle lets you use the electric motor only up to 37 mph and only turn off the engine when the battery is low and then there are four wheel drive, which brings the power to all four wheels via the diesel and electric motors.
Claimed figures UK miles per gallon for the Hybrid4 are; Urban 72 4 3 74 extra urban 76 4 handsets stats are good, and while the actual figures differ, they are still decent, with driving the highway showed nearly 48 mpg to 50 if I led more slowly, and obviously if you're using the electric mode ZEV around the city, with the diesel cut once the battery is low or if you stray above 37 MPH, you are looking for good returns and less re-fueling of a non-hybrid.
The automatic transmission is 6 speed with paddles, and it is quite awful in anything other than the light acceleration More on this in the next section.
Press the start button Citroen DS5 Hybrid4 and you will hear nothing Always starting in electric mode, torque his snoring and ticking noises as the circuit sort themselves, but otherwise, there is little to to be heard, except a low hum as you hunt this buzz, however, seems to disappear, and driving in almost silently to save a bit of tire noise.
If you have not driven a hybrid before, it's very strange feeling driving in electric mode, and the look on the passengers for the first time faces still is one of disbelief that the Citroën slipping to stop there something very satisfying about driving the DS5 Hybrid4 in ZEV mode, as you know, you're not spending a dime on fuel when moving slowly in traffic, or driving through the city, and Silence is the DS5 a place to relax too much DSport has double glazed windows and soundproofing is also very well done, keeping both outside and road noise at a low level.
With the Hybrid4 already looking as well as he does, people will not notice the car, adding that you can visibly see the bewilderment on their faces as you drift past quietly in ZEV mode, Citroën status DS5 Hybrid4 will be maximum 37 mph, but in fact I managed 40 mph sometimes it isn ta plug-in hybrid, and battery charging takes place when you brake or take your foot off the accelerator or the engine must load get too low.
If you slow down at highway speeds, it obviously generates electricity and it slows the car breaks down quickly almost as if you were a light pressure on the brake pedal, the battery level increases rapidly if braking or deceleration at higher speeds, but the use of the city showed the slow charge, which means you have to use all the power you'll be struggling to get back on full electric driving.
I managed January 3 Miles 2 09 km in ZEV mode, and I think it could go further, but it's based on factors such as heavy traffic is, what the road gradients are similar and even how the weather is cold, I had a full battery level showing, and all was well until I was driving an inclined section sharp but short of the road, where the level has dropped to zero in just about 50 meters.
In automatic mode on the dial, other than a slight pressure on the accelerator will see the setting fire of the diesel engine, and you need to move very slowly, and that the construction of the speed to keep the Electrics on the diesel engine n not as calm as I liked? speeds of the city below, but once you are driving at 35 mph addition, not really noticeable, and all that soundproofing keeps pretty minimal too.
The HDi 160 turbo diesel works well, and I found it to be smooth, accelerating it when you need it 0 60 mph made 8 three seconds, although oddly, he felt slower if I am honest and you'll max out at 131 mph 6-speed automatic gearbox is fine around town, or if you drag up to sixty or 70 mph at a slower pace, but if you decide accelerate hard to get up to speed, the transmission DS5 suddenly becomes ridiculous, hideous pig of an automatic.
I will try to describe how it feels the road opens in the national speed limit, and I push the accelerator down The DS5 accelerates as it should be, but it seems pull the reigns, heavily lunge, take a deep breath, change gear, and dive forward strongly again, before repeating the process once again it absolutely remember being on a swing I rather change the handles to see if it makes a difference, but exactly the same question that I have seen other reviews of the DS5 Hybrid4 give the same comments.
How Citroën never thought it was good to put this gearbox in their admiral or any other model ship, I do not understand what is wrong, and honestly after that, I'm seriously disappointed by the DS5 Hybrid4, and just when I thought things were while showing its way too you have beautiful eyes, a beautiful and luxurious interior, decent ride and quite blatant disorder of a transfer, I'll just be hard without accelerating hard and it is bearable, but if you have already been informed about it.
As for the ride and drive, with a curb weight of 1856 kg 4,091 lbs Citroën DS5 Hybrid4 is a heavy car for its size, and although the steering is light course, you certainly get a sense of its implementation pound that does not mean he is jolting or obtains a lean in the corners too bad because it's actually quite well-behaved, and it's pretty good all heftiness considered.
Trying to keep the DS5 Hybrid4 driver himself decently through the corners, they stiffened the ve suspension may be a little too much, as low urban driving speed showed the Citroen to mount as they substantially closes just haven peace t given the luxurious ride waft- as merit, and it tends to be too harsh on poor surfaces and bumps.
I covered a good amount of miles in the week, the DS5 Hybrid4 was with us, and most were driving on highway If you have the distance obtained to cover the DS5, you will find a very relaxing place to be, with great cruise feat I ended a round trip of 7 hours on the highway suspectée.Un several sections of road works and of course the heavy traffic accordingly, driving rain and motorists morons, finally coming to a stop silent before my house thanks to the electric motor, and I was quite cold out and instead of jumping willingly Citroën and rubbing me dramatically for effect, I sat there for a minute thinking about how a pleasant place cabin is always a good thing.
The Citroën DS5 beginning to 23.500 for the e-HDi 115 DSIGN DS5, running to about 33,300 for the DS5 Hybrid4 DSport least asked all options on price, and before I knew what it was, I guessed at 35 to 30 thousand were he physically felt about right Under the terrible gearbox, the Citroën DS5 DSport feels luxurious and well-built enough to require the price, and I think it is fair enough.
However, I would have to save about 4000 going to be the HDi 160 diesel manual or petrol THP 200 manual on the Hybrid4, so there is always the element of luxury out there without breaking the 30K mark .
Rivals to the DS5 adding options to make the same specification of the DS5 DSport include cars like the Volkswagen CC GT 2 0 TDI 140PS manual about 30,000, Audi A4 Sedan SE Technik 2 0 Manual TDIe 29 5 km or HYbrid4 3008 manual for a little over 31K, but here's something to mull over if you spec of the DS5 DSport Hybrid4 high enough, you will be hit 35,000, and for the same price you could have a Jaguar XF February 2 i4 163 liters turbo diesel sE, including a load of options tick boxes Tempting.
Citroen DS5 Hybrid4 DSport 200 Airdream verdict score.
DS5 Hybrid4 DSport The Citroën is a luxury car, showing a lot of panache to the outside and a very attractive interior design, which finally has a good fit and finish too Sá It is very much for Citroen, and quite the call if you want to be seen in something different with character and individuality by the bucket load there are few modern cars can boast such features, and for me the outer and inner beauty, as well the fact that this car was the soul, it is the main selling factors.
According to most modern French cars, it is also very secure, using not only many driving aids including EBD brakeforce distribution, braking assistance EBA, ESP stability program and traction control but incorporates also a high level of security more than enough impact to be awarded a Euro NCAP 5 stars actually.
Although the HDi 160 diesel engine is smooth and has good torque, n Hybrid4 system is not as good as it should be, and the automatic transmission is very poor now, I'd avoid unless it's Hybrid4 , you really feel you can put up with the higher price and the terrible gear and go for one of the other engine options with a manual gearbox.
On a final note, I d Highest rate DS5 with one of the aforementioned engine; May 7 10 5 of 6 J had the Hybrid4.
Do you own a 2013 Citroen DS5 Hybrid4 What do you think about that, and what are the best and worst points of share your thoughts and leave a comment below.

I had my almost new hybrid DS5 for about a month now, I'd first seen one there nearly a year and has been struck by is the design I read reviews and was concerned about the conduct often described as hard After weeks of research and trying other brands I kept returning to the DS5 and finally took the plunge that took the car on a 24-hour test track so I can take it to work on familiar roads road manners are perfectly acceptable on 18 wheels on my two-lane rural roads and urban Vee I not known the author gearbox ways then maybe that s adjusted on later models, it s by style bags, is calm and comfortable and still a rare beast by the way I'm glad to see your pictures taken near the Deep very shark- as in construction and the car.
Hi Thanks for the comment, and we are glad that you are enjoying your weird hybrid DS5 to the gearbox, but these things might we see more testing different cars all the time once a race, it is fine, but much more sensitive in the city we love this interior superbly very French style in the design Anyway, we hope you find our review of some use before settling on the car, and enjoy your new engine Thank you, Chris.
